A gang of 15 robbers stopped a Royal Mail train and stole £2.6 million, making it one of the largest robberies in British history.
On August 8, 1963, a gang of 15 thieves stopped the Glasgow-to-London Royal Mail train and stole £2.6 million (equivalent to about £50 million today).
THE GANG: Led by Bruce Reynolds, the gang included Buster Edwards, Charlie Wilson, and Ronnie Biggs.
THE EXECUTION: They tampered with the trackside signal system and forced driver Jack Mills to stop the train. Mills was struck with an iron bar, suffering permanent injury. The gang formed a human chain to unload 120 mailbags.
THE HIDEOUT: At Leatherslade Farm, the gang split the money and played Monopoly with real cash. But they failed to burn the farm as planned.
THE MISTAKE: Police found the farm five days later with fingerprints on the Monopoly board.
THE ESCAPES: Ronnie Biggs escaped to Brazil and became a celebrity fugitive, eventually returning to the UK voluntarily in 2001. He died in 2013.
Only £400,000 of £2.6 million was ever recovered.
