The Brink's-Mat Robbery: Gold Heist That Shaped British Crime

File No. 23Confidential

Six robbers stole £26 million in gold bullion from a Brink's-Mat warehouse at Heathrow Airport. Most of the gold was never recovered, and the curse that followed killed dozens.

On November 26, 1983, six armed robbers stole £26 million worth of gold bullion from Heathrow Airport. Most was never recovered, and a "Brink's-Mat Curse" of violence killed dozens connected to the crime.

THE HEIST: The gang found £26 million in gold—far more than the £3 million in cash they expected. Anthony Black, a security guard and inside man, provided codes and layouts.

THE CURSE: At least 10 people connected to the robbery died violently over the following decades:

  • John "Goldfinger" Palmer: Shot dead 2015
  • Brian Perry: Shot dead 2001
  • Kenneth Noye: Stabbed an undercover police officer, later convicted of road rage murder

THE GOLD: Most of the gold was smelted and integrated into the legitimate economy. It may be in jewelry owned today.
